The Summer Scholar's Program

About the Summer Scholar’s Program:

The Summer Scholar’s Program (SSP) is a 4-6 week, full-day, academic program held during July and August. The program is designed to continue the educational progress made during the academic year and to provide opportunity for new and different learning experiences. Various trips to museums, zoos and art exhibits help to broaden life experiences while having a measurable impact on the students’ vocabulary and by extension, their reading comprehension. The summer months provide an opportunity to enrich the curriculum beyond what is typically covered during the academic year. Dissection projects in science, movie production, creative writing in English Language Arts, and Olympic games in mathematics help to encourage a love of learning and a desire to succeed. Students also get to enjoy swimming, barbequing and playing sports at local parks and at the homes of friends and benefactors of San Miguel Academy.

Special Programs:

In addition to the Summer Scholar’s Program held at San Miguel Academy, many private schools and boarding schools provide scholarship opportunities for students to attend camps specializing in mathematics, creative writing and computer technology. Four San Miguel Academy students participated in creative writing camps held at The Perkiomen School (PA) and Cheshire Academy (CT) during the summer. The Sprout Creek Farm day camp provided all San Miguel 6th graders with a chance to learn about agriculture, farm animals and farm management during this one week, hands- on- program.

Boarding School Week:

The final week of the Summer Scholar’s Program is dedicated to the 7th & 8th grade classes. Both groups attend a one week, away-from-home boarding school experience. This past summer, the week was sponsored by The Canterbury School in New Milford, CT. San Miguel Academy students lived on campus for 5 days, attended classes taught by master teachers, and enjoyed athletic events and special evening activities. The purpose of the on-campus experience is to enlighten the boys as to what it means to attend a boarding school and to empower them to think of high school options beyond the City of Newburgh.
